Instructions for PhD candidates

The purpose of this brief guide is to provide PhD students with useful information about online services.

University portal

By visiting the UniTo portal at en.unito.it, you can consult:

...and much more!

Student credentials

When you enrol on the University portal, you will receive your student credentials to access MyUniTo. PhD candidates who were already registered as students at the University of Turin will retain the same credentials.

As a result, even if the student ID number changes, your username and login will remain the same.

Your student credentials are:

  • username: name.surname or name.surname123 (in case of namesake)
  • password: the same password you chose when you first logged in

These student credentials grant access to:

  • MyUniTo – student profile
  • student webmail (see below)
  • online services for students, which will be available only after enrollment has been completed.

For security reasons, your password must be changed every 6 months.

If you experience any authentication issues on the University website or need to recover your credentials, please fill out the dedicated form available on the Help and support page or call the toll-free number 800 098590 (available Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., for calls from Italian phone numbers only).

PhD candidate credentials for accessing research services

Your PhD candidate (SCU) credentials are activated only after the start of your PhD programme and consist of the following:

  • username: typically, it consists of the first letter of your first name followed by your surname, up to a maximum of 8 characters (e.g., a user named Maria Gonzales would have the username mgonzale). If you share the same name as another user or have a double first or last name, your username may follow a different pattern
  • password: the default password is your tax code in uppercase letters.

SCU credentials are created when you begin your first collaboration with UniTo. They are sent to the personal email address you provided during your PhD programme enrollment or when signing a contract. If you also provided your phone number, you will receive a message about this communication.

SCU credentials grant access to:

  • MyUniTo as a fellow/PhD candidate and the University intranet
  • university staff webmail (see details below)
  • the IRIS platform (UniTo’s scientific production archive) and other online services for University staff

For security reasons, you must change your password every six months.

Login to MyUniTo

Once you have received your credentials, follow these initial steps:

  • access your MyUniTo personal area. If the login is successful, your last name and first name will appear in the top-right corner
  • updatie your contact information in the University Directory (phone, fax, etc.): from MyUniTo, go to the 'Online Services' menu and select 'Modify directory data.' Then, choose 'Directory and private contacts (mobile, email, etc.).' To ensure effective support in case of login issues, it is important to provide your mobile phone number, which you can choose not to display in the directory
  • Reading the Portal user guide.
Webmail service

PhD candidates from the 24th cycle onwards have access to two email accounts: one as a student and one as a PhD candidate.

Student webmail

  • e-mail address format: usernameStudente@edu.unito.it (e.g., maria.gonzales@edu.unito.it)
  • access via: student webmail
  • credentials required: student credentials.

PhD candidate webmail

  • email address format: firstname.lastname@unito.it (exceptions apply for double first names, double last names, or duplicate names, e.g., maria.gonzales@unito.it)
  • access via: University staff webmail
  • credentials required: PhD Candidate credentials (SCU)

To access the student webmail from any PC with an internet connection:

To access the staff webmail:

Starting from 30th September 2024, each user will have 100 GB of storage available on their Google account. This space will be shared across email, documents, and other services.

The University WiFi

With your credentials you can also access the WiFi service, designed to guarantee the highest level of protection, in terms of authenticity of authorisations and access guarantees, integrity of messages and protection of personal data.

For permanent use of the service at university sites where there is coverage, we recommend using the Eduroam network. If, on the other hand, you need to connect to the network occasionally, we suggest you use Unito-WiFi. For more details on how to access the WiFi network and instructions for access configurations, please consult the page dedicated to the service.

Keeping of authentication credentials

Users are responsible for the preservation and secrecy of the authentication credentials (the credentials are strictly personal and must be guarded with care similar to the PIN code of a bank card).

Users undertake to immediately notify the University of Turin of any unauthorised use of his/her user identification (username) and password or any other breach of security of which they become aware.

Disabling access to services

PhD candidate credentials

Access to services using PhD candidate credentials (portal, personal University webmail, IRIS, and other online services reserved for staff) is automatically deactivated after the 6th year from the natural expiration of the programme, unless there is a suspension of activity with a subsequent deadline extension.

From the natural expiration of the programme, SCU credentials can no longer be used to access electronic journals, e-books, and paid databases subscribed to by the University.

For PhD candidates who have been granted an extension for their thesis defence (final examination), access to the mentioned services will still be deactivated after the 6th year from the legal expiration of the programme.

Online service access and authentication credentials (username and password) will be disabled if the user has not logged in within 90 days of account creation.

To reactivate deactivated credentials contact the toll-free number 800098590 (available Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.) or fill out the online form.

Regularly check the University Intranet for updates regarding access and usage of online services available to PhD candidates.
