This page is intended to help you submit a complete application for admission to higher education or to further higher education studies in our University. You can find information regarding foreign educational systems and the required documents according to the Italian law  and the yearly recommendations given by the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MUR) in the Procedures for entry, residency and enrolment of international students and the respective recognition of qualifications for Higher Education courses in Italy.

The University reserves the right to request at its discretion any additional document that may be necessary for evaluating your educational background.

Applications must be complete of all the required documentation. Incomplete applications will not be considered, so please make sure you have attached all the required documents before submitting it. Documents without any signature, seal or stamp will not be accepted.

All documents uploaded in your online application are accepted in Italian, English, French or Spanish. If your original documents are issued in a different language, you will have to attach a certified translation into one of the accepted languages.

In order to enrol, the International students office will need to verify the authenticity of your study documents. To speed up the enrolment procedure, we suggest you provide our office with proof of authenticity of your study documentation during the application phase (if already available).

Required documents for application
Undergraduate degrees (laurea) or 5-6-years postgraduate degrees (laurea magistrale a ciclo unico)
  • Valid ID card (Italian, EU citizens and equivalent) / valid passport (non EU citizens)
  • A residence permit valid for university enrolment (non EU citizens legally residing in Italy, as per article 39, clause 5, legislative decree July 25, 1998, no. 286 and subsequent modifications and supplements)
  • Upper secondary study qualification obtained after a minimum of 12 years of global schooling (EQF level 4 / ISCED 3) and having attended at least the last two years in the foreign education system of reference. It must be provided with proof of authenticity
  • Other documents:
    • transcript of records (required if there are any doubts on the years of schooling)
    • mandatory national entrance examination provided with proof of authenticity
    • additional requirements specific for some countries
    • declaration of value / statement of comparability CIMEA (not mandatory but useful or may be mandatory if requested by the office).

Verify on the program's presentation page if there are any additional requirements.

The Italian education system is a consequential system which provides access to the next cycle only if you hold the previous qualifications. Therefore, for admission to an undergraduate or 5-6 years postgraduate degree programs, it is mandatory to have a formal upper secondary school qualification (art.6 of Ministerial Decree 270/2004). A University  degree cannot replace it.

You can enrol at an Italian university if you hold a qualification (upper secondary or equivalent) obtained after at least 12 years of global schooling, provided that it grants access, in the foreign education system of reference, to a degree program equivalent to the Italian program you are applying for. Moreover, these qualifications grant access to Italian universities if they have been obtained after attending at least the last two years in the same foreign education system of reference.

If you have attended a pre-school year, it may be included in calculating the 12 necessary years to access Italian universities if the attendance of the pre-school year was mandatory and the course program included the teaching of the native language of the country and basic arithmetic. In this case, the attendance of the pre-school year has to be mentioned and included in your online application among the uploaded documents.

If you have not yet completed your studies

If you have not finished your school studies and you will not get your final study qualification within the deadlines to submit the online application, you will be requested to upload:

  • official certificate attesting your enrollment in the last year of studies and the kind of curriculum you are attending and the name of the study qualification you will obtain
  • official score report of the academic year/semesters so far attended.

To enrol you will have to hold the final study qualification.

If you hold a qualification obtained after less than 12 years of schooling

If you hold a qualification obtained after 11 or 10 years of global schooling, it does not  grant access to Italian universities unless you meet one of the following additional conditions:

  • you attended one year (for holders of qualifications awarded after 11 years of global schooling) or two years (for holders of qualification awarded after 10 years of global schooling) of university studies and took all the exams foreseen by the first year (in case of 11 years) or the first two years (in case of 10 years) of the degree program.
In this case, you also have to attach to your online application your university transcript of records along with an official certificate stating you passed all the exams foreseen by the first year (also second year in case of 10 years of global schooling)
  • you obtained a post-secondary study qualification to compensate for any missing year of secondary education in a subject related to the degree program you are applying for. In this case, you also have to attach to your online application your post-secondary study qualification and  its transcript of records
  • you attended a preparatory program (Foundation Programme) at the University of Turin or at another Italian university, to compensate for the missing year of schooling (in case of 11 years). Such program could be also  accepted if  attended at a recognized and/or accredited (by the foreign education system) foreign higher education institution and if it officialy belongs to the foreign education system.
In this case, you also have to attach to your online application a certificate stating that you have successfully completed the Foundation Programme as well as all the exams and ECTS credits/study hours.

For example, pre-university global schooling  in Azerbaijan, Brazil (for qualifications issued before 2006), Colombia, Venezuela, Russia, Belarus, Peru, Kazakhstan, Ukraine and Costa Rica is less than 12 years, therefore applicants have to  meet on of the above-listed additional requirements to access Italian universities.

In some countries, pre-university global schooling’s length have changed over time and it may be necessary to provide documentation relating to the entire schooling (example: Brazil).

Mandatory national entrance examination

If a mandatory national entrance exam is required in your country to enroll in university, the same exam may also be required for admission to Italian universities, so make sure you attach it to your online application (example: Greece, People's Republic of China , Republic of Cyprus, Spain, etc.).

The Italian education system is a consequential system which provides for access to the next cycle only if you hold the previous qualifications. Therefore, for admission to postgraduate degree program, it is mandatory to have an upper secondary school qualification (art.6 of Ministerial Decree 270/2004). This qualification may be requested at University discretion, especially if the university qualification held belongs to a non-consequential educational system.

A study qualification belonging to the same cycle (e.g.: Master's degree) or further cycle (e.g.: Doctor of Philosophy) cannot be considered alone for admission to a postgraduate degree program ("laurea magistrale"). It is always necessary to submit the first cycle or integrated study qualification along with any intermediate academic qualifications (eg: Associate's degree) and  its study plans.

Should you hold a foreign study qualification obtained after studies mainly carried out in Italy, the recognition, even partial, of this qualification is subject to the accreditation procedure of the institution operating in Italy, as established by Decree n. 214 of April 26 2004, “Regulation containing criteria and procedures for foreign higher education institutions operating in Italy for the purpose of recognising their qualifications (implementation of Article 4 of Law No. 148 of 11 July 2002)”, in implementation of Article VI.5 of the Lisbon Recognition Convention.

If you hold the Diploma Supplement of your university studies, it may be provided as an alternative to both the study qualification and the transcript of records, but it must be issued on the basis of the international model developed through an initiative of the European Commission, the Council of Europe and UNESCO and it must also include the complete transcript of records. It must be signed and/or sealed and provided with proof of authenticity.

To enrol you will have to hold the final study qualification.

Specific study documents by country

Given the great diversity of education systems around the world and their continuous evolution over time, this file is not to be considered exhaustive and complete. Some requirements indicated may differ for some specific cases. If you hold a study qualification other than those indicated and you believe it allows access to the degree program of your choice, upload it to the appropriate application platform for its evaluation.

Study documents verification (Proof of authenticity)

In order to enrol, verification of the authenticity of your study documents is required. Below you will find more information on the accepted verification systems, along with a few examples of verification methods specific to some Countries and school/academic systems. In order to speed up the following enrolment procedure, we suggest you provide our office with proof of authenticity of your study documentation during the application phase (if already available).

You will find for which documents you will need to provide proof of authenticity within the list of required documents.

Common verification methods:

  • legalization (affixed on the foreign document by the competent Italian diplomatic-consular authority)
  • Apostille (for contracting parties of the Hague Apostille Convention of 5 October 1961) affixed on the foreign document by the competent foreign authority (not the Italian authority)
  • statement of verification issued by an ENIC-NARIC center (usually it only confirms the authenticity of the study qualification, not the content of the transcript of records)
  • vidimazione (for study qualifications issued by the Holy See)
  • for some countries (e.g. Turkey, India, Pakistan, Ukraine, …) there are official and recognized platforms for the digital verification of the study qualifications. Our University can directly verify the authenticity of the qualifications through these platforms. For other countries, however, students must register on specific platforms and/or request the sharing of their data. These services may have a fee that the students must bear. We invite you to provide us with information on the available verifications methods in the country which issued your study qualification, and any data essential for the verification.

Some Universities provide on their own websites verifications services for degrees and transcripts of records, while other Universities may use third parties for sending electronic transcript of records (e-transcripts, national students clearinghouse, Digitary, Truecopy, Parchment etc.). For the latter, the documents must be sent directly to [email protected] and uploaded on Apply@UniTo / Universitaly, together with the service request receipt.

Consider that:

  • our University will not accept the sharing of personal credentials (username and password) for the purpose of logging in the applicant’s personal University profile
  • verification methods requiring any form of payment by the University will not be accepted
  • our University will not directly contact the Institutions that issued the documents
  • if it is not possible to verify the requested documentation online, the candidate must provide one of the common proofs of authenticity (legalization/Apostille or Statement of Verification), as stated above
  • Austria, Belgium, Danimark, Estonia, Francia, Germania, Irlanda, Lettonia are exempted from legalization/apostille

Here are some examples of accepted methods of verification, by no means this should be considered an exhaustive and complete list.
