Visa and pre-enrolment on Universitaly
The pre-enrolment procedure is the first step to request a study Visa.
Therefore, it is mandatory for all non-EU applicants residing outside of Italy only.
- I am a non-EU applicant residing abroad and requiring a study visa. How can I apply?
Please refer to the page Application for non-EU citizens residing abroad. See also both section Application on Apply@UniTo and section Visa and pre-enrolment on Universitaly - I am a non-EU applicant but I already legally reside in Italy. Do I have to create a Universitaly account?
No, the pre-enrolment procedure is mandatory for non-EU applicants residing outside of Italy only, as it is the first step to obtain a study Visa.
EU and non-EU citizens who are legally residing in Italy do not need a Visa, so they are exempted from this procedure. - I am already in Italy for study reasons and wish to continue my studies at UniTo. Do I have to pre-enrol on the Universitaly platform?
It depends on your specific situation. For example, if you are enrolled in another university and wish to ask for a transfer for the University of Turin you can directly apply for residence permit renewal. Quite the opposite, if you were enrolled in another Italian University thanks to a residence permit for study reasons, but you closed your University career, you have to come back home and ask for another Visa on the Universitaly platform. Anyway, since there are a lot of different cases, for this type of question, you have to refer to the Questura or send an email to [email protected], the administrative support office for residence permit matters. For further information see Residence permit page.
- How can I apply for a Visa?
Non-EU applicants residing outside of Italy need a study VISA to travel to Italy and study at the University of Turin.
You can apply for a Visa only after:
- submitting the pre-enrolment request on Universitaly
- receiving the pre-enrolment validation.
Once you have completed all these steps, you can contact the Italian embassy/consulate that you indicated in your pre-enrolment application and begin the VISA application process.
Visa issuing is of exclusive competence of embassies and consulates and the University does not interfere in their activities.
- Can you help me obtain a Visa?
Visa issuing is of exclusive competence of embassies and consulates.
Should these authorities require additional information concerning the admission and enrolment procedures, they will contact us directly. We will be pleased to assist by providing them with the necessary information and support documents required.
- Which are the required documents to apply for a Visa?
Always check with the Italian embassy/consulate for the precise list of required documents. As a general rule, according to the Ministerial guidelines, the following documents are required at the VISA application appointment:- pre-enrolment summary
- entry Visa application form
- 4 recent passport-size pictures of your face
- proof of admission. The University of Turin proof of admission is the summary you can download from your Universitaly profile
- proof of adequate means of subsistence and sum for repatriation
- proof of a suitable accommodation in Italy
- adequate health insurance cover for medical expenses and hospital stays
- other documents, depending on the country.
- The Italian embassy/consulate is asking for the health insurance proof. I intend to subscribe to the national healthcare system. What should I do?
As the subscription to the National Healthcare System can be made exclusively once you arrive in Italy, this cannot be used as an adequate proof of health insurance.
You must possess adequate insurance that covers for medical expenses and hospital stays. Further requirements may be asked by the embassy/consulate, therefore please refer exclusively to them.
- My Visa has been refused. What can I do now?
You can appeal against the embassy/consulate’s decision within seven days from the Visa refusal. If the Visa request is refused, you are usually also provided with the refusal letter giving you the necessary instructions on how to proceed with the appeal.
- My Visa has been granted after the appeal. What should I do now?

If you reside in a country which is different from that of your citizenship, please verify with the Italian Embassy in your country of residence the possibility to apply for your study visa and submit your pre-enrollment application according to the information provided by the Embassy.
- I do not have an Italian tax code, what should I do?
During the registration process on Universitaly, once you fill all required information the website will automatically calculate a temporary Italian tax code, therefore you can either insert this one or just leave the section blank, as it is not a compulsory requirement at pre-enrolment stage. You will have to ask for the Italian tax code once you arrive in Italy. The temporary tax code generated automatically by the Universitaly platform may be different from the one provided in Italy.

In this case, please contact [email protected] to request your pre-enrolment cancellation.
