Visa and pre-enrolment on Universitaly

What is the pre-enrolment on the Universitaly portal?

The pre-enrolment procedure is the first step to request a study Visa.

Therefore, it is mandatory for all non-EU applicants residing outside of Italy only.

Should I use Universitaly?
  • I am a non-EU applicant residing abroad and requiring a study visa. How can I apply?
Please refer to the page Application for non-EU citizens residing abroad. See also both section Application on Apply@UniTo and section Visa and pre-enrolment on Universitaly
  • I am a non-EU applicant but I already legally reside in Italy. Do I have to create a Universitaly account?
No, the pre-enrolment procedure is mandatory for non-EU applicants residing outside of Italy only, as it is the first step to obtain a study Visa.
EU and non-EU citizens who are legally residing in Italy do not need a Visa, so they are exempted from this procedure.
  • I am already in Italy for study reasons and wish to continue my studies at UniTo. Do I have to pre-enrol on the Universitaly platform?
It depends on your specific situation. For example, if you are enrolled in another university and wish to ask for a transfer for the University of Turin you can directly apply for residence permit renewal. Quite the opposite, if you were enrolled in another Italian University thanks to a residence permit for study reasons, but you closed your University career, you have to come back home and ask for another Visa on the Universitaly platform. Anyway, since there are a lot of different cases, for this type of question, you have to refer to the Questura or send an email to our [email protected], the administrative support office for residence permit matters. For further information see Residence permit page.
Study Visa
  • How can I apply for a Visa?

Non-EU applicants residing outside of Italy need a study VISA to travel to Italy and study at the University of Turin.

You can apply for a Visa only after:

    • submitting the pre-enrolment request on Universitaly
    • receiving the pre-enrolment validation.

Once you have completed all these steps, you can contact the Italian embassy/consulate that you indicated in your pre-enrolment application and begin the VISA application process.

Visa issuing is of exclusive competence of embassies and consulates and the University does not interfere in their activities.

  • Can you help me obtain a Visa?

Visa issuing is of exclusive competence of embassies and consulates.

Should these authorities require additional information concerning the admission and enrolment procedures, they will contact us directly. We will be pleased to assist by providing them with the necessary information and support documents required.

  • Which are the required documents to apply for a Visa?
Always check with the Italian embassy/consulate for the precise list of required documents. As a general rule, according to the Ministerial guidelines, the following documents are required at the VISA application appointment:
    • pre-enrolment summary
    • entry Visa application form
    • 4 recent passport-size pictures of your face
    • proof of admission. The University of Turin proof of admission is the summary you can download from your Universitaly profile
    • proof of adequate means of subsistence and sum for repatriation
    • proof of a suitable accommodation in Italy
    • adequate health insurance cover for medical expenses and hospital stays
    • other documents, depending on the country.

  • The Italian embassy/consulate is asking for the health insurance proof. I intend to subscribe to the national healthcare system. What should I do?
As the subscription to the National Healthcare System can be made exclusively once you arrive in Italy, this cannot be used as an adequate proof of health insurance.
You must possess adequate insurance that covers for medical expenses and hospital stays. Further requirements may be asked by the embassy/consulate, therefore please refer exclusively to them.

  • My Visa has been refused. What can I do now?
You can appeal against the embassy/consulate’s decision within seven days from the Visa refusal. If the Visa request is refused, you are usually also provided with the refusal letter giving you the necessary instructions on how to proceed with the appeal.

  • My Visa has been granted after the appeal. What should I do now?
Immediately inform the International students office.

    How can I pre-enrol?

Please, have a look at our tutorial.

    • I have already registered to Universitaly but I never sent the pre-enrolment request OR it has been rejected. Do I have to create another account?
No, you don’t have to, please use the profile you already created. Remember to use the same profile and avoid registering again to the Universitaly platform. Simply select the correct academic year.

    • I cannot find the right academic year, should I submit regardless?.
No, you must send the pre-enrolment for the academic year you wish to apply to. Applications submitted for the wrong academic year will not be considered.

    • For how many programs can I apply on Universitaly?
On Universitaly you can apply for one degree program only.

    • Which embassy/consulate should I choose?
You have to choose the embassy or consulate competent in your country of residence, where you will submit your visa application.

    • I reside in a country but I do not have the citizenship of this country. Which embassy/consulate should I choose?
If you reside in a country which is different from that of your citizenship, please verify with the Italian Embassy in your country of residence the possibility to apply for your study visa and submit your pre-enrollment application according to the information provided by the Embassy.

    • I do not have an Italian tax code, what should I do?
During the registration process on Universitaly, once you fill all required information the website will automatically calculate a temporary Italian tax code, therefore you can either insert this one or just leave the section blank, as it is not a compulsory requirement at pre-enrolment stage. You will have to ask for the Italian tax code once you arrive in Italy. The temporary tax code generated automatically by the Universitaly platform may be different from the one provided in Italy.

    • What is the ID of the University of Turin?
You do not need to fill it in. Please leave the ID field empty.
    After submission
    • When will my pre-enrolment be validated?
There is no specific window of time for your pre-enrolment to be validated, even though it usually takes around 2 months. It mostly depends on the number of requests received by our University.
There is no action required from your side at this stage. Make sure to check your email and your Universitaly profile so as not to miss the notification informing you that your pre-enrolment request has been validated or that you have a request to correct/integrate wrong/missing information.

    • I have received a request for integration. What should I do?
If you have received a request for integration, it means that there is some missing or wrong data and/or documents. In the communication you have received, you are also notified about which details/documents are missing or wrong and you are given the instructions on how to edit the data. Please check carefully the communication we sent you and act upon it in a timely manner. Once the requested correction has been made, please remember to re-submit your pre-enrolment request.

    • Can I change the embassy/ consulate I selected?
If your pre-enrolment has not been validated yet, you can change the embassy/consulate by contacting the Universitaly technical assistance.
If your pre-enrolment has already been validated, please send a request to the International students office, in order to modify the embassy/consulate selection.

    • I have pre-enrolled with my old passport but I changed in the meantime. What should I do?
If your pre-enrolment has not been validated yet, you can edit the data and the document uploaded by contacting the Universitaly technical assistance.
Otherwise, you must send an email to [email protected] explaining the situation and attaching the new passport so that we can change your passport number on your Universitaly request.

    • I made a mistake in filling the data. What should I do?
If your pre-enrolment has not been validated yet, you can contact the Universitaly technical assistance to request the necessary correction.

    • I want to change the degree program on my pre-enrolment. What should I do?
If your pre-enrolment has not been validated yet, you can contact the Universitaly technical assistance to request the necessary correction.

    • My pre-enrolment has been validated. Does it mean I will receive a Visa?
No, the pre-enrolment validation does not mean that you will automatically receive a Visa. This is simply the first step to request a Visa. Please note that Italian embassies/consulates are the only institutions that can issue a Visa and that the University does not interfere with their activities.

    • How can I download the pre-enrolment summary?
After validation of your pre-enrolment request by the International Students Office, you can download the summary by entering your profile on Universitaly, viewing your application and selecting the option "Summary".

    • My pre-enrolment has been validated, but the embassy/consulate did not contact me yet. What should I do?
Once your pre-enrolment has been validated, you need to personally contact the Italian embassy/consulate you selected in your pre-enrolment application to verify the correct procedure to apply for your Study Visa. The University of Turin will not contact the embassy/consulate on your behalf.

    • I have sent my pre-enrolment to your University but now I want to change it because another University accepted me. What should I do?
If your pre-enrolment has already been validated, the University of Turin must first reject your pre-enrolment and then you will be able to fill in another pre-enrolment at the other university.
In this case, please contact [email protected] to request your pre-enrolment cancellation.
