Medical device comprising a chitosan-based support structure

Technology description

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among European and American men. Treatment of prostate cancer commonly involves surgical therapy including radical prostatectomy. However, despite the increasing use of nerve-sparing techniques, such as robot-assisted surgery, urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction remain major adverse consequences of radical prostatectomy.
The proposed solution consists in an advanced structure comprising chitosan for use in prevention and/or treatment of incontinence and/or impotence in a subject undergoing radical prostatectomy. The solution comprises also a method for protecting a prostatic neurovascular bundle of a subject, wherein the advanced structure comprising chitosan, preferably in a form of a surface-modified film, is applied in contact with the prostatic neurovascular bundle of the subject undergoing prostatectomy.
The designed proposed overcome the above reported drawbacks.

Applications

The structural designed proposed is improved compared to existing solutions. In particular, the proposed structure can facilitate nerve repair, particularly in the interfacial nerve sparing treatment option, that can efficiently support the early return of continence and potency in patients following prostatectomy.

Key advantages

The proposed solution is designed to prevent and treat incontinence and or impotence in a subject undergoing radical prostatectomy.
