The BIP “Beyond Borders: Migrations, Identities, Languages” is organized by the University of Turin for its third edition within the framework of the UNITA alliance, in collaboration with Saarland University and the T4EU alliance.

This event represents one of the first examples of an inter-alliance BIP, fostering international cooperation and enriching academic experiences across multiple institutions. Through this initiative, the involved European Universities Alliances aim to strengthen partnerships and enhance the global reach of our educational programs.

Objectives and description

The "Beyond Borders: Migrations, Identities, Languages" Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) examines the cultural, social and political significance of borders amid global transformations. Borders serve multifaceted roles, encompassing spatial, political, and administrative functions while profoundly influencing cultural, linguistic, and social dynamics.

Key themes include:

  • borders as sites of contact and exchange between nations, cultures, and languages
  • the discriminatory practices of exclusion, such as immigration restrictions or border conflicts
  • the interplay between borders and social cohesion or fragmentation
  • the impact of the European Union’s open-border policies, with a focus on challenges posed by recent global events, including the pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war.

This course adopts an interdisciplinary approach, incorporating insights from social and historical studies, politics, linguistics, and cultural analysis.

Field of Education: Social Sciences
