Deputy Rector

The Deputy Rector supports the Rector in the leadership and coordination of the University, representing and overseeing key strategic areas. A full  professor appointed by the Rector, the Deputy Rector substitutes the Rector in case of absence or impediment. The term of office coincides with that of the Rector.

 

As of 1st October 2025, the Deputy Rector of the University of Turin is Gianluca Cuniberti, full professor of Greek History.

 

He graduated in Classics from the University of Turin in 1993 and earned a PhD in Ancient History from the University of Pisa, following a period of advanced studies at the “B. Croce” Italian Institute for Historical Studies in Naples. He began his academic career as a research fellow in 2004, becoming Associate Professor in 2014 and Full Professor in 2018 in the Department of Historical Studies.

 

He has served as Director of the Department of Historical Studies (2018–2024), Vice Rector for Research in the Humanities and Social Sciences, Chair of the Research Committee of the Academic Senate and Rector’s Delegate for the University’s Museum and Archival System.

 

His research focuses on the political, institutional, and social history of ancient Greece, with particular attention to Athenian democracy, the relationship between participation and corruption, and the role of historical memory through historiography and ancient theatre. He has authored over eighty scientific publications, including five research monographs. He is Director of the Observatory on Representation: International Centre for the Study of the State, Citizenship, and Democracy and is involved in numerous national and international research projects.

 

He advocates for the strategic role of the humanities, cultural heritage, and public engagement at a local level, supporting the ideal of a polycentric, inclusive, sustainable, and innovative university. His work is dedicated to strengthening ties with local communities, enhancing internationalisation, supporting young scholars, and promoting the social impact of research, teaching, and public engagement.
