Tax identification code
Tax identification code (codice fiscale in Italian) is a code made up of letters and numbers on the basis of your first name, family name, date and place of birth. It is a very important document, used by the Public Administration, to identify the citizens living in Italy.
Codice fiscale is necessary, for instance, in order to:
- apply for residence permit
- open a bank account
- enter into a tenancy agreement
- receive the payment of a scholarship, to earn a salary
- carry out other procedures/activities.
Before travelling to Italy, you can apply for an official Italian tax code at the Consulate/Embassy in your country.
UniTo exchange/degree-seeking students are offered a support service for their tax code request. To obtain it, you can write an email to [email protected] specifying your status. The procedure usually takes a few working days.
To apply for a tax identification code, EU citizens have to hold a valid identification document.
Non-EU citizens need to show one of the following documents:
- a valid passport with visa (if required to enter Italy), or any other document accepted by the Italian authorities
- a certificate of identity issued by the Italian diplomatic or consular authorities of the Country of nationality (with photo)
- a valid residence permit (permesso di soggiorno)
- an ID card issued by the municipality of residence in Italy.
