2014
  • On December 5 2014, in the Cavallerizza Great Hall of the University of Turin there was held the Convention Italia-Messico. Cammini che si incrociano. Dialogo a più voci sul fenomeno migratorio. Italia-México. Caminos que se cruzan. Voces migrantes. The Convention, introduced  by the University Chancellor, by the President of the Latin America and Caribbean United Committee and by the President of the Regional Council of Piedmont, was attended by representatives of the Italian and Latin-American academic world, by representatives of the Associations which work in the fields of migration, human rights, the struggle against human traffic and enslavement and exploitation of the labour of migrants, of direct witnesses of the migratory phenomenon, and of migrants who survived the terrible voyages, crowded as animals, on barges in the Mediterranean Sea or hanging on to freight trains in Mexico and Central America.  This Convention represented the final stage of the first “Carovana Italiana per i Diritti dei Migranti, per la Dignità e la Giustizia” which had started in Lampedusa on November 22 and arrived in Turin on December 4. This Convention promoted a reflection on the causes of the migratory phenomenon, on the direct and indirect responsibilities at the root of the constant increase of the migratory flux, on the role of criminal organizations and of the serious defaults of States and public powers,  on the possible solutions aimed at setting up reception networks and humanitarian corridors for the protection of the migratory population. Such reflection has contributed to underline the analogies between what happens in Italy and the dramatic context in Central America and Mexico.

2013
  • In early 2013  Unicuba edited A native culture: the Paraguay Guaranis. An interdisciplinary approach between traditional medicine and linguistics. The book is structured in two parts. The first one, Granny Paulina’s  Drugstore, Mbya Guarani Ethnobotanics, is the translation of a work published in Paraguay and written by four members of ngo Madre Tierra: Urbano Palacio, Susana Cingiale, Roberto Ayala Hornung and Patricia Ayala. The second, Bilingual Paraguay, includes the translation of two works by Henry Boyer, Hedy Penner and Mateo Niro. Granny Paulina’s Drugstore is a collection of an ancestral knowlede connected with  plants of  the Paraguaian forest and their use in healing. Paricularly exciting is the fact that this specific knowledge (in our case Granny Paulina Nunez Kerechu’s) has been basically kept and transmitted by women: a memory that has to be saved and nurtured also and above all in countries like Italy, where in the past few years the great richness of traditional medical science and old popular drugs has bee re-discovered.
On May  18, 2013  the book A native culture: the  Paraguay Guaranis was presented and discussed at the 26th International  Book Fair  with the participation of Marcela Bartolu (Minister of Culture in Paraguay), Urbano Palacio /co-author) and Franco Prono.
  • In January 6-10, 2013 two events organized by Casa de Africa of the Ufficio del Historiador and sponsored by Uni-Cuba were: The route  of the slave (Unesco),  coordinated by the Castillo Museum in San Severino di Matanzas; and, together with the National Council of the Houses of Culture, the 17th Scientific Workshop of Afro-American Social and Cultural Anthropology  and the sixth Meeting on Orality: Afropalabra Festival, whose aim was to develop the cultural relation  of Africa with Caribe and Continental America, by playing  a  culturally revitalizing role on both sides, in the past and the present.  In a series of workshops the results of the works of the National  and Provincial Commissions of the project The route of the slave (2012) concerning the Afro-descendants were described and analyzed and various projects  on these same themes proposed by institutions and scholars were  presented. In parallel with the Scientific Workshop the sixth Meeting on Orality: Afropalabra Festival, dedicated to  some forms of oral narration and artistic expressiveness of Afro-descendants took place, with the contribution of Cuban and international artists. The Casa de Africa is willing to meet all scholars, students and professional people interested in deepening with personal and original contributions the anthropological themes of these events  in a multidisciplinary and international perspective.
  • Our Committee has promoted the conclusion of a specific Agreement for cooperation between the  University  of  Turin  and  the  University  Ixil  (Ixil  Region,  Departamento  El  Quiche) of Guatemala, on the occasion of the visit to Turin of the Rector Pablo Ignacio Sanchez in December 2013.
2012
  • In June 12, 2012 at the Officine Corsare in Turin, The Madre Tierra of the Guaranis, an event organized by Uni-Cuba in cooperation with Sur (Human Resisting Societies) took place: a meeting bases on words and images with  Patricia Ayala, Roberto Ayala Hornung and Urbano Palacio as witnesses of the Paragyaian Ngo Madre Tierra. Despite the hot weather somehow similar to the climate of Amazonian regions running on the screen, a numerous young audience showed their deep interest with a series of notes and questions, maimly addressed to Madre Tierra people. The evening was introduced by Franco Prono, President of Uni-Cuba, and by Giorgio Poltroniere, a member of SUR. The video presented, created by Guarani populations themselves during a ritual hunting expedition, offered a chance to Urbano Palacio, who worked with Mario Bechis in the film The land of Red People, to  reason about the concrete actions that may help in preserving the thousand-years old knowledge of those populations in the area of biodiversity, as a reaction to the attempt of erasing them as the heritage of a by now useless and anachronistic past.
On the occasion people agreed  that Uni-Cuba, as a Committee that on a larger scale is interested in the whole area of Latin America, ought to feel free to propose activities aiming to connect university didactics with the themes born and discussed in the meeting. This  need does not involve only these countries, but appears to be current and urgent also in our rich Western World, coping with heavy environmental and economic problems. Madre Tierra is a non-profit and independent Paraguayan Ngo aiming at preserving the cultural roots of the principal native populations of Paraguay, protecting their natural resources and privileging  the ancestral knowledge of the river and forest people  and their cultural and biological difference. The faster and faster social changes, the heavy pressuro of the so-called civilized world and of a wild economic development against native populations,  make it necessary and fundamental the presence and action of  Madre Tierra, anxious not to lose the . The three guests at the Officine Corsare have been working together with the Mbyà Guaramni Ytu and Ypeti ethnic groups of the Paraguaian  department of Caazapa since 1091.
  • Madre Tierra organized a very interesting exhibition, full of important testimonies of Guarani culture, De lo étnico ancestral a lo étnico moderno, at the Castle of Magliano Alfieri, a few miles from Alba /May26th.June 17, 2912.
