Seminar: Cities in Global Capitalism: Entrepreneurialisation of society and the self

Argument:
30 March 2017 from 3:00pm to 5:00pm

The seminar "Cities in Global Capitalism: Entrepreneurialisation of society and the self" will take place on Thursday 30th March 2017 at Campus Luigi Einaudi (Lungo Dora Siena, 100 - Torino, Aula E5) and not at Palazzo Nuovo as previously reported.

Introduction to the seminar by Dario Padovan

Speaker: Ugo Rossi (University of Torino)

This seminar will present and discuss the newly published book entitled "Cities in Global Capitalism" (Polity, 2017). The book revolves around the key question of why the fates of cities and capitalism have become so inextricable in times of globalization. Looking at such different forces as financialization, innovative entrepreneurship, the housing sector, consumption, technology, the experience economy, the book offers a comparative analysis of the ways in which urban economies and societies reflect and at the same time act as engines of global capitalism in a biopolitical age.

In particular, the book shows how post-recession cities are witnessing a shift from an entrepreneurialisation of governance structures, as was theorised by David Harvey in the late 1980s, to an entrepreneurialisation of society and the self, enabled by digital technologies and related communicative networks.
