Recognition of foreign credits (abbreviazione di carriera)

If you are regularly enrolled in a degree program at UniTo you may apply for the recognition of credits (so called abbreviazione di carriera in Italian) you obtained in a previous academic career at a foreign institution/university, which could either have been finished or attended partially without having obtained the final degree.

Upon acceptance of the outcome of your request, this procedure may allow you to have some credits/exams taken abroad recognized in your current university career at UniTo that will be included in your career plan by the competent Students Registry Office (Segreteria Studenti) for the degree program you currently enrolled at.

In compliance with the Tuition fee regulations in force, the following fees are required for this procedure:

  • 86 euro non-refundable fixed fee to be paid upon submission of each request (70€ for the evaluation  and 16€ of virtual duty stamp).
  • additional 340 euro to be paid only if you apply for the recognition of credits taken in an unfinished academic career. Therefore you have to pay this addional fee only if you have not obtained your final foreign degree and your latest year of attendance abroad is an academic year that is not immediately preceding your year of enrolment at UniTo and you accept the outcome of the recognition whose details are included in the competent Department resolution that will be sent to you per email.

You may apply for credit recognition throughout the whole academic year by emailing [email protected] from your UniTo official email address (name.surname@edu.unito.it) attaching all required documents.

List of required documents

  • duly filled in application form
  • valid ID card or passport and valid residence permit (for non EU students)
  • transcript of records issued by the foreign university including marks and ECTS/credits assigned to each exam, provided with legalization or apostille and certified translation into Italian or English. As an alternative diploma supplement with legalization or apostille
  • degree program syllabus issued by the foreign university provided with translation into Italian or English. If the university does not issue this kind of document you can provide the degree programme syllabus available on your university website and include in your email the links where we may verify the attached syllabus
  • if you have obtained your final degree, a copy of it with legalization or apostille and certified translation into Italian or English. As an alternative, diploma supplement provided with legalization or apostille
  • if you have not obtained your final degree, a declaration issued by your foreign university certifying your latest year of enrolment provided with legalization or apostille and a certified translation into Italian or English
  • a declaration issued by your foreign University describing the applied grading system provided with a translation in Italian or English. If the grading system is clearly described in another document listed above, it is not necessary to upload this document.

If you cannot legalize your study documents, you can ask your foreign University to send us your study documents per email to [email protected].

In order to access the Italian higher education system it is necessary to hold a study qualification obtained after at least 12 years of global schooling. If you obtained your diploma after less than 12 years of schooling, only the foreign credits/exams that have not been considered to integrate the missing years of schooling will be taken into account for a credit recognition request.

The University reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to request further documents if necessary for evaluating your educational background.

Once submitted, your application is checked by the International Students office and:

  • if it is complete, you will receive instructions to pay the required fee. After the payment, your documents will be sent to the evaluation of the competent Board of Professors
  • if it is not complete, we will ask you to upload all missing documents. Upon provision of all missing documents, you will receive instructions for the payment.

Once your recognition request has been submitted to the competent Board of Professors, please regularly check your inbox since the offices or the Professors who manage your credit recognition request may contact you by email for further information or clarifications if needed.

You will receive the outcome of the recognition per email within 90 days.

If you are enrolled in a degree program with quota of places (accesso programmato), the career shortening (abbreviazione di carriera) will be possible only if there are available places at the academic year stated in your credit recognition outcome. If there are no available places, you may have some credits/exams recognized, but being still enrolled at your current academic year.
