Gender-Inclusive Language
The toolkit “University. A Feminine Noun. Inclusive Language at UniTo” is a practical guide to inclusive language and a concrete support tool designed for teaching staff, students, and technical-administrative staff. It provides solutions and suggestions to promote open, broad, and inclusive communication that is attentive to the changes in the society in which we live.
Promoting a broad and shared culture of well-being in working life, inspired by the recommendations of the European Commission and based on the principles of equal opportunities, gender equality, and diversity, is one of the essential factors for the life of academic communities.
From this perspective, the 2021–2026 Strategic Plan of the University of Turin (italian version) provides for:
“the continuous promotion of a culture of equality and inclusion, with deep respect for diversity and a constant commitment to combating all forms of discrimination based on age, gender, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, religion, political views, or disability, through strategies, actions, and tools capable of valuing differences.”
Among the actions set out in the Gender Equality Plan 2023, with the specific objective of fostering a “Culture of equality and the fight against stereotypes”, there is the consolidation of a culture of inclusive language (Area 1, Objective 2, Action 5).
To this end, the University of Turin is carrying out several initiatives with the support of CIRSDe, the Interdisciplinary Center for Research and Studies on Women and Gender, and with the active participation of the Communication Community of Practice.
