Safe Space UNITO

What it is and what it offers

SAFE SPACE UniTO: a safe place for LGBT+ people was created thanks to the University’s contribution through the 2023 Participatory Budget, with the aim of fostering a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment for LGBT+ people within the University of Turin.

The concept of a “safe space” originated in feminist movements and LGBT+ communities and is now used to promote environments that are more equitable and free from discrimination, judgment, or other forms of physical or emotional discomfort.

Safe Space UniTO is an open environment for dialogue, learning, and collective building, maintaining a respectful and free space in which all subjectivities are at the center.

The University Safe Space service is a physical, accessible location within university premises, designed to offer:

  • support and active listening for those experiencing discrimination or distress related to gender identity and sexual orientation;
  • counseling and guidance on LGBT+ issues;
  • training and awareness-raising activities for students, teaching staff, and technical-administrative staff;
  • informational and outreach materials on rights and available services;
  • cultural events and initiatives to counter stereotypes and discrimination.

The project promotes collaboration with associations, experts, and national and international organizations, thus also serving as a laboratory for best practices in inclusion.

The scientific coordinator of the project is Professor Luca Rollè.

Who it is for

The Safe Space is for all LGBT+ people studying or working at the University of Turin who need to discuss issues related to sexual orientation, gender identity, or situations of discrimination they have experienced directly or indirectly. The Safe Space, together with the CUG, the Trusted Advisor, and numerous other services, aims to build a more equitable university community that respects all individualities.
