The research activities of the department on water focus on:

  • use of irrigation resources in agriculture, crop needs, distribution and monitoring techniques aimed at saving water resources, also with a view to climate change;
  • risk assessment for runoff and percolation in the aquifer of nutrients linked to the management of livestock effluents, the type of forage systems, and the type of soil, also in relation to the management of grazing; specific actions in areas vulnerable to nitrates and in pastured mountain areas;
  • water efficiency in the barn with attention to animal welfare, but also to the quality of the effluents, with consequent simplification of their management and agronomic enhancement;
  • water reuse in an integrated aquaculture production system, with removal of pollutants and enhancement of effluents, in a circular economy perspective;
  • protection and enhancement of the biodiversity of Italian livestock breeds as a resource for adaptation to climate change and in particular for resistance to heat stress.
