Remote Exams and Teaching Accommodations

With a view to promoting the right to education, the University of Turin has approved specific procedures to facilitate access to course attendance and the taking of exams.

In particular, procedures have been introduced to allow remote exams for health-related reasons, as well as the possibility to request adjustments to attendance and teaching arrangements for health reasons, pregnancy, and new parenthood.

Remote exams

By resolution of the Academic Senate, the University has provided the possibility—until further notice—for students with serious, long-term or permanent health-related difficulties to request that course exams, graduation exams and/or final exams, and state examinations be carried out remotely in telematic mode, where such conditions make attendance at university facilities extremely difficult or impossible.

These conditions must be certified by a general practitioner or by a specialist physician affiliated with the National Health Service, or an equivalent authority for international students (in this case, certifications must be issued or legally translated into Italian or English).

If you wish to submit a request, you must follow the procedure below:

  1. send your request by email to the Student Inclusion Services Section at [email protected], attaching your medical documentation, unless such documentation is already held by the Section
  2. requests will be assessed by the Medical Committee which, if the request is approved, will also establish the period of validity of the authorization. If deemed necessary for individual cases, the Medical Committee may ask you to provide additional documentation certifying the impossibility of carrying out in-person activities, including the related medical justification and the validity period of the prescription
  3. the Medical Committee will carry out evaluations on a monthly basis, according to the schedule indicated below
  4. the outcome of the evaluation will be communicated to you by the Student Inclusion Services Section via your UniTo institutional email address
  5. if the request is approved, you will receive a formal written authorization.

To take individual course exams remotely, you must inform the course instructors at least 10 working days before the exam date, attaching the authorization.

To take the graduation exam, you must inform the academic office with at least 15 working days’ notice.

To take the state examination, you must inform the relevant offices and/or the examination committee with at least 5 working days’ notice.

How long will it take to receive a response after submitting the application?
The calendar indicates the monthly deadlines for submitting applications. A response will be provided approximately within the fifteenth working day following the submission deadline for that month.

Are remote exams available to all students with disabilities or invalidity?
No. The Medical Committee’s assessment concerns the actual impossibility or extreme difficulty of accessing university facilities for health-related reasons. Therefore, submitting disability or invalidity certifications alone may not be sufficient, and additional supporting documentation may be requested to confirm this need.

Does choosing to undergo diagnostic tests or therapeutic procedures outside my place of residence authorize me to take exams remotely?
No. The decision to undergo diagnostic tests or therapeutic procedures outside one’s place of residence does not in itself constitute grounds for taking exams remotely.

Can I request remote exams due to pregnancy?
No. Authorization to take exams remotely may be granted only in cases of high-risk pregnancy.

I have an exam coming up soon. Can I request an urgent evaluation by the Medical Committee?
No. Urgent evaluations are not предусмотрed, and it is necessary to follow the published calendar. In exceptional cases, situations may be reported where it is necessary to take specific exams due to proven urgency (e.g. the last exam required to obtain the CFUs needed for a scholarship, a visa for international students, or similar situations).

My authorization has expired. What should I do?
You may submit a new application, necessarily attaching updated medical documentation. In the case of chronic conditions, a statement from the treating physician or general practitioner confirming the persistence of difficulties with in-person activities may be submitted.

I have documentation in a foreign language. Can I submit it?
Medical documentation must be issued or legally translated into Italian or English. Documents in other languages will not be considered.

Is it sufficient to submit a work sick leave certificate (INPS)?
No. You must submit medical documentation that explicitly states the health-related reasons for requesting remote exams. The purposes of a work sick leave certificate are different.

Teaching adaptations

The University, through the Student Inclusion Services Section, aims to provide support for teaching adaptations for students due to certified health reasons, pregnancy, and support for parenthood.

In these cases, instructors may implement various teaching adaptation measures, such as agreed study programs, alternative materials, asynchronous learning activities and lecture recordings, as well as the possibility to attend classes remotely in synchronous mode.

Where required by current regulations, attendance remains mandatory for practical classes, laboratories, and internships, as well as for any other compulsory in-person teaching activities, and up to 66% of classroom lecture hours for degree programs with mandatory attendance.

These adaptations may be granted to students who are unable to attend classes due to certified health reasons, whether long-term or permanent; to pregnant students starting from two months before the expected delivery date; and to student parents of children up to three years of age.

In cases of high-risk pregnancy, students may benefit from these measures even before the two months preceding the expected delivery date.

You may submit such requests provided that you are regularly enrolled at the University of Turin and have not opted for a suspension of your academic career, in accordance with the Student Career Regulations and the Tuition Fees and Contributions Regulations.

To start the procedure, you must contact the Student Inclusion Services Section by email at [email protected], attaching the medical documentation supporting your request (unless such documentation is already held by the office), the pregnancy certification, or a self-certification of family status (in the case of new parenthood).

The Section will verify that the applicants have not opted for a suspension of their academic career.

The outcome of the evaluation will be communicated to you by the Student Inclusion Services Section via your UniTo institutional email address. If the request is approved, you will receive a formal written authorization to be presented to instructors in order to request teaching adaptations for individual courses.

In case of difficulties, you may ask the Student Inclusion Services Office to inform instructors about the possible measures available to you. As a second step, the CUG (Guarantee Committee) may also be involved.

The possibility of taking exams remotely, instead, follows a different procedure. Authorization for teaching adaptations does not automatically grant authorization to take exams remotely.
