BorDeMEr 2026 International Seminar. Syria, whither Transition?
The BorDeMEr 2026 International Seminar Syria, Whither Transition? Socio-Political Processes, Economic Transformation and (Re)definitions of Democracy will take place on Thursday 11th and Friday 12th June 2026, starting at 9:00 a.m., online and in Room B2 of the Luigi Einaudi Campus of the University of Turin (Lungo Dora Siena 100/A).
The initiative brings together sociologists, economists, legal scholars, journalists and key figures involved in the Syrian revolutionary process to examine the transformations taking place in Syria following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime. Through multidisciplinary perspectives, the seminar explores processes of political transition, economic dynamics, the role of local and international actors, and emerging forms of democratic participation.
The event is part of the activities of the project YouR BorDeMEr – Building a Theory of Cross-Border Democracy to Cope with Emerging Challenges in Europe and Beyond, coordinated by Davide Grasso at the University of Turin. The project aims to bring the debate on Syria back to the forefront of international research and to reflect on the significance that the construction of a “new Syria” holds for the Middle East and the broader global context.
